"Somebody I Use To Know", by Gotye featuring Kimbra, is a Grammy winning recording and its simple to see why. It's not they didn't record in a million dollar studio. Well, they didn't. But, what they did do was invest. If you care to know step by step what they did read the article on the other side. But the bottom line is get a good mix, invest in mastering, and the people that matter WILL listen. And no your homie who was trained on YouTube won't work. By the way they sold 9 million.
